NATO tests new maritime drone with flying unmanned aircraft

In NATO conducted testing of a surface drone equipped with two flying drones. After completing the tasks, the UAVs can return to the surface platform.

So far, surface drones are being tested mainly for reconnaissance missions. Experts evaluate their effectiveness in the marine environment, because unmanned systems allow for real-time surveillance.

Flying drones are fixed not inside the drone, but on special external platforms. In addition, a camera is installed on the superstructure of the drone, which provides a view of the surrounding space. The Alliance draws attention to the current instability in the field of maritime security. To effectively respond to modern threats, NATO created the “Special Group X” (Task Force X).

The initiative is aimed at introducing innovative solutions, in particular the use of maritime drones and artificial intelligence, to strengthen safety at sea. The main goal is to collect information about modern unmanned systems and advanced technologies with further integration of this data into a single information network.

At the same time, Taiwan is studying the experience of Ukraine, which has successfully used maritime drones in the Black Sea against Russia, to determine the possibility of using such UAVs to defend against a potential Chinese invasion.
