Number of new vacancies in the UK decreased by 30% after the launch of ChatGPT

The number of entry-level jobs in the UK has fallen by almost a third since ChatGPT launched, as companies increasingly use AI to streamline and downsize. About this informs The Guardian with reference to research on the job search site Adzuna.
Vacancies for graduates, interns, interns and junior positions without degree requirements have decreased by 32% since November 2022, when the AI-powered chatbot was launched. The share of such vacancies in the UK labor market decreased from 28.9% to 25%.
“Adzuna’s figures follow a separate warning from its rival job site Indeed, which last week reported that university graduates were facing the toughest job market since 2018. It found that job vacancies for recent graduates fell by 33% in mid-June compared to the same period last year.” – says the message.
Companies are increasingly turning to artificial intelligence as a tool to increase productivity while reducing staff. Dario Amodei, CEO of $61 billion AI developer Anthropic, has warned that the technology could wipe out half of all entry-level office jobs in the next five years and cause unemployment to rise by 10-20%.
Large companies are increasingly handing AI tasks that used to be performed by humans. In particular, Klarna reported that its AI system now handles two-thirds of all support requests. IBM said it is using AI agents to perform the functions of hundreds of human resources employees, even as it has expanded its hiring of programmers and salespeople.
At the same time, the Tony Blair Institute notes that losses in the private sector can be offset by the creation of new jobs thanks to AI. According to a recent report from consultancy PwC, workers with AI skills will earn 56% more than those without in 2023, up from 25% a year earlier.
