Poland discovers largest oil and gas field in country’s history

A new field of oil and natural gas was discovered in the north-west of Poland. The operator company Central European Petroleum (CEP) called it the largest in Poland and one of the largest in Europe in the last ten years, informsBusiness Insider Poland.

The Wolin East 1 (WE1) well, drilled in the Baltic Sea six kilometers from the town of Świnoujście, confirmed the presence of 22 million tons of crude oil and 5 billion cubic meters of industrial natural gas.

According to preliminary estimates provided by the Energy Policy Center, the field’s total reserves may exceed 33 million tons of oil and 27 billion cubic meters of gas.

“This is a historic moment for the Polish energy industry. Wolin East is more than just a promising field, it is a joint opportunity to reveal the entire geological and energy potential of the Baltic Sea,”– stated CEP President Rolf G. Skaar.

Poland’s chief geologist Krzysztof Galos noted that this discovery can significantly strengthen the country’s energy security and reduce dependence on external sources of energy supply. Before the start of industrial production, it is necessary to complete the registration of geological documentation and obtain all necessary permits.

The Canadian company Central European Petroleum (CEP), which specializes in oil and gas exploration and production, has been operating in Europe since 2006. Outside of Canada, it has subsidiaries in Germany and Poland. CEP’s Polish division has been operating since 2018 under the Wolin prospecting license, covering onshore and offshore areas near Świnoujscie.
