NATO does not rule out reducing the US role in supporting Ukraine after the elections

NATO expects that after the presidential elections in the USA, Washington’s role in supporting Ukraine may decrease, so other member states of the Alliance should take on more responsibility. About this informs CNN citing sources.

During a closed-door meeting with NATO colleagues, US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin spoke about the impact of the upcoming US election on aid to Ukraine. He emphasized that he cannot predict future developments, but this issue remains important.

According to sources, bipartisan support for Ukraine is still maintained in the US Congress, but NATO is preparing for a possible reduction in the level of aid from the US.

“We cannot expect the US to continue to shoulder a huge burden. That is why the Secretary General wants to see NATO as a leader in security assistance, not just an ally taking it on.”, — said a high-ranking official of the Alliance

This question is gaining relevance against the background of the possible victory of Donald Trump in the presidential elections. NATO representatives believe that Europe should “step up even more” to compensate for a possible decrease in American support.

Trump’s position on the war in Ukraine

During his election campaign, Donald Trump repeatedly claimed that he would be able to “end the war” if re-elected, but did not reveal the details of exactly how he would do it. According to Reuters, his advisers have prepared a plan according to which additional military aid to Ukraine will be provided only on the condition that Kyiv agrees to negotiations with Moscow.

Trump also announced his intention to stop financial aid to Ukraine. During the debate with Joe Biden, he called Vladimir Putin’s demands for the withdrawal of Ukrainian troops from the occupied territories and Ukraine’s refusal to join NATO unacceptable.

However, in a debate with Kamala Harris, when Trump was asked twice if he wanted Ukraine to win the war, he twice avoided a direct answer, saying that he just wanted the war to end and people not to die. Harris noted that Trump will “surrender Ukraine” within 24 hours of his election. Later, Trump publicly spoke in favor of the US withdrawing from the conflict in Ukraine, noting that Washington is “stuck” in it.
