Children of war

Restoring childhood: an exhibition of works by Ukrainian refugee children in Budapest

In the very heart of Budapest, a unique exhibition was solemnly opened, which presented the creativity of children from Ukraine, aged from 3 to 8 years old, who were forced to leave their homes due to the war and temporarily live in Hungary. This event became a true symbol of hope and restoration of childhood for young Ukrainians who have survived difficult trials.

The exhibition, organized thanks to the joint efforts of the Budapest Municipality, the UNICEF Ukrainian Refugee Support Program in Hungary, the House of Ukrainian Traditions and NestingPlay, gathered many interested visitors, including representatives of the authorities and ordinary citizens.

Mayor of Budapest Gergey Korachon, opening the exhibition, expressed his support for Ukrainian children and emphasized the importance of helping them in this difficult time. He noted that there are many partners in Hungary who are working to return childhood to Ukrainian children, as well as help them survive the trauma of the war. In his opening speech, the mayor mentioned numerous initiatives aimed at facilitating the adaptation process for young refugees, and expressed the hope that the exhibition will be another step towards their rehabilitation and integration into Hungarian society.

The exhibition was opened not only with a solemn speech, but also with touching performances by children who shared their stories and demonstrated their talents. Each work presented at the exhibition was created as part of a “role play” that was part of the “Summer Camps for the Development of Skills and Competences for Refugee Children from Ukraine” program. This program was implemented thanks to the funding provided by the Regional Office of the UNICEF Ukrainian Refugee Support Program in Hungary, under the conditions determined by the Budapest Municipality, as part of the competition “Provision and Reception of Refugee Children from Ukraine 2024”, organized and conducted by the Budapest Social Fund. The project was implemented thanks to the cooperation of the House of Ukrainian Traditions and NestingPlay.

During her speech, the head of the “House of Ukrainian Traditions” foundation, Olena Beskorovayna, said that from September 2024, an official bilingual Ukrainian-Hungarian school will be opened in Budapest, which will open its doors to Ukrainian children who wish to continue their education. The school will provide education according to an adapted program in the Ukrainian language with extended study of the Hungarian and English languages, which will help children not only to preserve their national identity, but also to integrate into Hungarian society.

The Embassy of Ukraine in Hungary expressed its sincere gratitude to the Mayor of Budapest Hergei Korachon, the Regional Office of the UNICEF Ukrainian Refugee Support Program in Hungary, the leaders of the House of Ukrainian Traditions, as well as NestingPlay for organizing a wonderful exhibition and providing constant support to Ukrainian children affected by the war. This cooperation is an important example of international solidarity and support, which help Ukrainian children to find new hopes and dreams in this difficult time for them.

We will remind that in September, an official school for Ukrainian-speaking children will be opened in Budapest. Education will take place according to an adapted program in the Ukrainian language with extended study of the Hungarian and English languages, which will create favorable conditions for the development of children and their successful future.
