Romanian Prime Minister resigns after first round of presidential elections

The Prime Minister of Romania, Marcel Colaku, announced his resignation and called on his party to leave the government. He cited the results of the first round of presidential elections as the reason. About this informs G4Media.ro.
“The ruling coalition was formed in December with two goals: to have a stable government, a majority in the parliament and a common candidate for the presidency of Romania. We failed in one of these tasks. We saw yesterday the Romanians’ vote. This means that the ruling coalition has no legitimacy.” – explained to Cholaku.
He noted that ministers from his party will hold consultations with representatives of other political forces of the coalition on whether they will continue to perform their duties as part of the interim government. Earlier, Čolaku already voiced the intentions of the Social Democrats to consider the option of leaving the coalition.
The first round of presidential elections took place on May 4. The leader of the far-right nationalist party “Alliance for the Unification of Romanians” (AUR) George Simion won the most support – about 41%. In the second round, which will take place on May 18, Simion will compete with the incumbent mayor of Bucharest, Nikušor Dan, an independent candidate of the centrist direction, who won 20.98% of the vote. The representative of the ruling coalition, Crin Antonescu, finished third.
After the announcement of Cholak’s resignation, the current ministers will remain in their posts in the status of acting responsibilities for another 45 days. Acting Prime Minister will be appointed from among the ministers. the president
