Federal Chancellor of Germany Olaf Scholz before the start of the emergency summit of the European Union named the main task of the meeting. According to him, it consists in ensuring the preservation of financial and military support for Ukraine, as only this will help achieve a just and stable peace.
“We are gathering today in Europe at a very important moment. We must ensure continued support for Ukraine. This is a task that will also be important today in the discussions at the European Council. In my view, the first priority is to ensure that financial and military support for Europe will be maintained.” – noted Scholz.
He believes that it is necessary to act wisely “to ensure continued support from the United States in the coming months and years, as Ukraine also depends on their help for its defense.” He emphasized that the aggression of the Russian Federation against Ukraine should end in a just peace, and the first step to this could be the cessation of hostilities in the air and at sea.
“This should also be the main task of the coming days to ensure the prerequisites for a fair and honest peace. It is important for Ukraine that this happens now. At the same time, it is very positive that the President of Ukraine has clearly stated that he can imagine that for now the weapons should fall silent – in the air, at sea – in order to create a basis for a ceasefire and peaceful development.” – stressed the German chancellor.
