At least 34 people killed in India due to severe floods

At least 34 people have died as a result of massive floods and landslides that have hit northeastern India over the past four days. About this informs Reuters.

In Assam, the situation remains tense due to heavy rains, with water levels continuing to rise in many areas and conditions approaching flooding. 764 villages were under water. On June 2, more than a thousand tourists were evacuated from the Himalayan state of Sikkim, where they were isolated due to the elements. In the state of Meghalaya, army rescue units were called in to rescue more than 500 people stranded in flooded areas.

In neighboring Bangladesh, a landslide killed at least four members of a family in Sylhet district. Hundreds of temporary shelters for evacuees were opened in the mountainous regions of Rangamati, Bandarban and Khagrachhari on Sunday.

Authorities urge residents of potentially dangerous areas to be especially careful, warning of possible new landslides and flash floods. The northeastern regions of India and Bangladesh suffer from heavy downpours every year, which often lead to deadly landslides and floods that affect millions of people. In the town of Silchar in Assam, roads and residential buildings are flooded, and the roadways are littered with fallen trees.
