With the beginning of the full-scale war, many Ukrainians found refuge in Poland, which became one of the key countries for temporary protection and support. However, when almost three years have passed since these events, Ukrainian refugees face a new question: how to adapt to long-term life and work in Poland?
From 2025, Ukrainians are offered to switch from the temporary Pesel UKR status to the CUKR card (Central Card of Ukrainian Refugees of the Republic of Poland). This card allows you to live legally in Poland for three years and provides access to official employment without additional documents. But at the same time, it takes away a number of benefits that were available to Pesel UKR owners, including free medical care.

What is a CUKR card and what is it for?
The CUKR card was created by the Polish government to facilitate the legalization of Ukrainian refugees who intend to stay in the country on a long-term basis.

The right to reside in Poland for three years.
Ability to work without obtaining additional permits.
Travel abroad for up to 6 months without loss of status.
At the same time, the CUKR card provides for the obligation to notify Polish authorities of a change of address or any other personal changes.
What you lose by switching from Pesel UKR to the CUKR card
Switching from Pesel UKR has its drawbacks. In particular, access to some benefits is lost:
- Free medical care from the National Health Fund of Poland (NHF).
- Additional social benefits provided as part of temporary protection.
However, officially employed Ukrainians have access to health insurance covered by their salary.

- Waiting for a decision. After submitting the application, you need to wait for its review and status confirmation.

Should I switch to the CUKR card?
The decision depends on your plans and needs.
If you plan to stay in Poland for more than three years and work officially, the CUKR card will be the best option.
If you are on social benefits and do not plan to be employed in the near future, you should carefully weigh the possible risks and benefits.
Work in Europe: how to get a work visa
Outside of Poland, many Ukrainians are also interested in employment opportunities in other European Union countries. For this, it is necessary to issue a work visa, which gives the right to legally work and live in the chosen country.
The main types of work visas in the EU:
- Short-term visa for seasonal work (up to 90 days).
- Long-term visa for permanent employment (more than 90 days).
- Blue Card – for highly qualified specialists, such as engineers, doctors or IT specialists.
How to apply for a work visa?
- Get an official offer from a European employer.
- Prepare the necessary documents: passport, invitation, medical insurance policy, education documents.
- Submit an application to the consulate of the chosen country.
The review of the application lasts from 4 to 8 weeks, after which an entry and employment permit is issued.
