Germany and Ukraine create a network of “Hubs of Unity” to support Ukrainian refugees

Ukrainian refugees who were forced to leave their homes due to the war face numerous challenges in the countries that have become their temporary refuge. Adapting to a new environment, finding a job, learning a language and integrating into society are key aspects of their new life. In this context, initiatives aimed at facilitating the adaptation of Ukrainians are of particular importance. One of these initiatives is the creation of a network of assistance centers for Ukrainian refugees “Unity Hub”, an agreement reached between Germany and Ukraine.
What is “Unity Hub”
“Unity Hub” is a network of support centers that will help Ukrainian refugees adapt to life in Germany or, at their request, organize a voluntary return to Ukraine. The main areas of work of these centers will be assistance in employment, organization of language courses, provision of consultations on integration and promotion of participation in the reconstruction of Ukraine.
The first center are planning to open in Berlin in the near future. In the future, such hubs should appear in other German cities. This initiative should become an important step in supporting Ukrainian citizens who were forced to leave their homeland.
Cooperation between Germany and Ukraine
The initiative to create “Unity Hubs” belongs to Ukraine, but the German government actively supported this idea. The negotiations in Berlin were attended by representatives of various German ministries and Ukrainian Deputy Prime Minister Oleksiy Chernyshov. The German government has stressed the importance of working closely with Ukraine to provide support for refugees and at the same time strengthen ties with citizens who have temporarily left their country.
According to German Interior Minister Nancy Feser, the centers will help Ukrainians as long as the war in their country continues. Oleksiy Chernyshov, in turn, called Germany a reliable partner of Ukraine in the sphere of social support, security and integration.
Ukrainian refugees in Germany: statistics and challenges
By the beginning of 2025, there are about 1.24 million Ukrainian refugees in Germany, of which 350,000 are children and teenagers. More than 60% of adult refugees are women. These people left their homes to escape the war and are now trying to build a new life in a foreign country.
Despite all the challenges, many Ukrainians in Germany have already been able to find work. In October 2024, 240,000 Ukrainian citizens were fully employed, which is 74,000 more than in the previous year. Another 50,500 Ukrainians are employed in “mini-jobs” with a salary of up to 538 euros per month.
However, the problem of integration remains relevant. For many refugees, the language barrier, cultural differences, and difficulty finding housing and work are significant obstacles.
The role of “Unity Hubs” in solving the problems of refugees
The creation of “Unity Hubs” will help to overcome many difficulties faced by Ukrainians. The language courses and cultural programs that will be offered in these centers will contribute to the faster integration of refugees into German society. Employment consultations will enable Ukrainians to find decent work, and support for voluntary return will help those who wish to return to Ukraine to do so as comfortably as possible.
In addition, the centers will become an important resource for those who want to get involved in the recovery of Ukraine, offering advice on how to participate in the country’s reconstruction initiatives.
“Unity hubs” are a practical solution to the problems of adaptation of Ukrainian refugees, as well as an important symbol of international solidarity and support. While the war continues, such initiatives demonstrate that Ukraine and its partners are working together to ensure a decent life for people in difficult circumstances. Thanks to this cooperation, Ukrainians in Germany will have the opportunity not only to survive difficult times, but also to find a way to stability, integration and recovery.
