Slovakia stated that Ukraine must compensate for the military assistance provided to it

The Slovak National Party (SNS), which is part of the current ruling coalition in Slovakia, made a statement that Ukraine should compensate for the military aid provided to it. The corresponding position was voiced by the director of the office of the head of SNS, Zuzana Shkoptsova, in a comment to the agency TASR.

The party believes that after signing the Ukrainian-American agreement on cooperation in the field of mineral resource development, Kyiv is obliged to take into account the contribution of European countries to its defense. The SNS calls on Prime Minister Robert Fico to initiate consideration of this issue at the level of the European Council and seek the involvement of EU countries in access to Ukrainian subsurface waters.

“There has never been such a precedent in world history when the head of state signs an agreement that effectively transfers the right to use all mineral resources to a foreign state. President Zelenskyy provided the USA with such an opportunity. But at the same time, EU aid is approaching American aid in terms of volume. If Ukraine gives its land to the United States, how will it compensate for its support for Europe?” Shkoptsova said, stressing that such a situation is illogical and contradicts ethical norms.

SNS Chairman Andrey Danko plans to discuss this issue with Finance Minister Ladislav Kamenitsky on May 26. It is about instructing the ministry to assess the amount of aid that Slovakia has provided to Ukraine, and to prepare an official package of documents for submission to the prime minister.

The party claims that the total amount of support provided to the Ukrainian state exceeds three billion euros. According to the SNS, if Kyiv undertakes to reimburse US aid, then European partners should also receive adequate compensation.

“If Ukraine has already agreed to pay support to the United States, it is unclear why a similar approach has not been applied to the European Union.” – added Škoptsova.

According to her, SNS expects that Prime Minister Robert Fizo will raise this topic at the upcoming summit of EU leaders.

Meanwhile, in April 2025, the European Prosecutor’s Office launched an investigation into EU financial losses related to military aid to Ukraine provided by Slovakia at the expense of a special fund. Although the current government of Robert Fizo has suspended the supply of arms from the state stockpile, it is not blocking commercial supplies from the private defense sector.

During the period of activity of the previous government, Slovakia transferred to Ukraine tanks, S-300 systems, MiG-29 aircraft, as well as significant amounts of ammunition. As former Minister of Defense Yaroslav Nagy reported, the lion’s share of 155 mm caliber shells produced at Slovak enterprises continues to arrive in Ukraine.
