Small modular reactors are planned to be placed in the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone

It is planned to identify sites for the installation of small modular reactors (SRM) in the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone. About this reported Hryhoriy Ishchenko, head of the State Agency of Ukraine for Management of the Exclusion Zone.

“We are also ready to allocate land plots for the placement of small modular reactors for Energoatom NPP. An agreement or memorandum on the start of work is expected to be signed in the near future. This is part of the program, which, I hope, will be implemented in Ukraine.” Ishchenko noted.

According to preliminary estimates by NAEC “Energoatom” and NEC “Ukrenergo”, 12 possible locations for placing small modular reactors have been identified in Ukraine. This technology is considered one of the key directions of post-war recovery, capable of increasing the energy security of the state and contributing to the reduction of carbon emissions in the economy.

Small modular reactors are a modern technology that is seen as a potential replacement for traditional large nuclear power plants. Their capacity does not exceed 300 MW, due to which such installations require ten times less space. The design of the MMR involves a modular principle: individual elements are manufactured in factories and mounted directly on the selected site.

We will remind that in March 2023, the Minister of Energy Herman Galushchenko announced that Ukraine plans to build up to 20 small modular reactors to replace thermal power units destroyed as a result of the war.
