The Cabinet of Ministers has approved a development strategy that envisages a reduction in Ukraine’s population by 2051

According to the estimates of the Institute of Demography and Quality of Life Problems of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, by 2051 the country’s population may decrease to 25.2 million people. The main reasons for this decline are the effects of war, low birth rates, high death rates and mass migration. About this informs “Ukrainian Pravda”.
According to the document, in 2001, the population of Ukraine was 48.5 million, but by the middle of 2024, this figure had decreased to 35.8 million. Of them, only 31.1 million people live in the territories where the Ukrainian authorities fully perform their functions.
The strategy approved by the government is aimed at minimizing demographic risks and ensuring stable reproduction of the population, which is critically important both during the war and during post-war reconstruction. Among the key tasks of the document are the creation of conditions for the birth and upbringing of children, support for the economic stability of families, access to housing, health care and the provision of jobs.
Separately, the strategy emphasizes the importance of the return of Ukrainians who were forced to leave the country due to the war, in order to restore Ukraine’s labor potential and demographic stability.
