The Cabinet of Ministers recognized the grave of Tzadik Nachman in Uman as a monument of national importance

The Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine made a decision to change the status of the monument of local importance “Grave of Tzadik Nahman” in Uman, Cherkasy region. From now on, this place, where Hasidim come every year from different parts of the world, has the status of a monument of national importance. About this reported representative of the government in the Verkhovna Rada, Taras Melnychuk.

“The category of the landmark of local importance “Significant place “Grave of the Tzadik Nachman”, located on the street, has been changed. Hryhoriya Kosinky, 1, in the city of Uman, Cherkasy region, to the category of monuments of national significance by type of history”, Melnychuk noted.

Tzadik Nahman is considered the founder of Bratslav Hasidism. At the end of his life, he settled in Uman, where he was buried on October 16, 1810. His grave has since become an object of pilgrimage, especially during the celebration of Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, which traditionally falls in September.

In the 1920s, this tradition was interrupted. During the Second World War, the grave was destroyed, and in the post-war period residential buildings were built in its place. Individual followers tried to find and arrange the remains of the burial. It was only in the 1980s that the tradition of visiting the shrine was revived, and since then pilgrimages have continued every year. In 2025, Rosh Hashanah will begin on September 25 and continue until September 27.
