The European Commission imposed fines on Apple and Meta

The European Commission has announced the imposition of significant fines on Apple and Meta — €500 million and €200 million, respectively — for violating the EU’s Digital Markets Act (DMA). About this it is said on the official website of the European Commission.

“Today, the European Commission concluded that Apple breached its governing obligations under the Digital Markets Act (DMA), and that Meta breached its own obligations under the DMA to give consumers the right to choose services that use less personal data. The European Commission therefore fined Apple and Meta EUR 500 million and EUR 200 million respectively.” – says the message.

The decisions were made after a comprehensive dialogue with both companies, during which they were given the opportunity to express their position and provide arguments in defense. After a dialogue with Apple, the European Commission decided to end the investigation into the company’s compliance with the provisions of the DMA concerning the freedom of choice for users.

At the same time, the Commission drew Apple’s attention to a preliminary finding that its contractual terms regarding alternative applications violate the requirements of the DMA. The European Commission also decided that Meta’s Facebook Marketplace service will no longer be subject to the DMA as an intermediary platform.

During a briefing in Brussels, the representative of the European Commission, Arianna Podesta, refuted the media’s assumptions about the possible connection of these decisions with the trade confrontation between the EU and the USA, stressing that both decisions are of an exclusively executive nature and are based on compliance with the provisions of the DMA.
