The European Union welcomed the adoption by the Parliament of Ukraine of the law on the independence of NABU and SAPO

The European Union welcomed the decision of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine to adopt a law that restores guarantees of independence for NABU and SAP. About this stated European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos.
“The Verkhovna Rada corrected a harmful decision made last week that undermined the independence of NABU and SAP. Today’s law restores key guarantees, but problems remain.” Kos stressed.
She also noted that the EU supports citizens’ demands for reforms, and emphasized that the support of fundamental values and the fight against corruption “must remain a priority” for the Ukrainian authorities.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Latvia Baiba Braje also congratulated adoption of the law restoring the independence of NABU and SAP. According to her, the actions of the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyi are “the right step for the European future of Ukraine.”
It will be recalled that on July 22, the Verkhovna Rada approved a law that reduced the powers of NABU and SAP. The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, signed the document on the same day. This decision caused protests in Kyiv and other cities.
On July 24, Volodymyr Zelenskyi approved the text of the new draft law on guarantees of the independence of the anti-corruption infrastructure. On July 31, the Verkhovna Rada voted for it in the first reading and as a whole. The purpose of the law is to strengthen the institutional independence of NABU and SAP, as well as to protect them from the influence of the aggressor state.
The document also envisages establishing the status of the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office as a body that independently carries out procedural management in cases that fall under the competence of NABU.
