The first million cubic meters of Ukraine’s own biomethane were pumped into underground storage facilities

During the last months of 2024, the two first Ukrainian biomethane producers pumped their first million cubic meters of biomethane into underground storage facilities. About this reported the chairman of the board of the Bioenergy Association of Ukraine, Heorhiy Heletukha.

“Since September, the first biomethane plant of the “Vitagro” group of companies has been operating in Ukraine. Since November, the second biomethane plant of the “Hals Agro” company has been operating. Today, these two plants pump biomethane into underground gas storages of Ukraine and have already accumulated more than 1 million cubic meters of biomethane there. That is in 2024, Ukraine produced the first million cubic meters of biomethane”, the message says.

Biomethane is a carbon-neutral substitute for natural gas obtained by refining biogas produced from biomass, in particular agricultural waste. At least five new biomethane plants are planned to be launched in 2025, which will increase annual production to more than 100 million cubic meters.

The head of the Bioenergy Association of Ukraine emphasizes that the development of biomethane production can become a key component of distributed energy generation in the country, especially in the conditions of the termination of Russian gas transit.

“Now, after the stoppage of the transit of Russian gas through Ukraine, we have two sources of gas: these are the Poltava and Kharkiv regions, where gas is extracted; and these are underground storage facilities in the west of Ukraine. From these two points, we need to provide gas to the whole of Ukraine. It is logistically difficult. Therefore, biomethane, if small plants were distributed throughout the country, solves the problems of natural gas logistics much easier.” Geletukha noted.
