The leadership of the UN called on the countries of the world to unite to end the war of the Russian Federation against Ukraine

Acting UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs Joyce Msuya called on the world community to take decisive measures to end Russia’s war against Ukraine. She stated this during a meeting of the UN Security Council, convened at the request of Ukraine to discuss the latest Russian attacks.

Musya noted that the situation is only getting worse, the death toll is increasing, and human suffering continues to remain at an unbearable level.

According to the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, more than 11,700 civilians were killed and more than 24,600 wounded in Ukraine. More than 10 million people have been forced to flee their homes due to the conflict.

Massive and systematic attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure lead to serious interruptions in electricity supply, due to which millions of Ukrainians daily face difficulties in accessing basic needs – water, heating, sewage, mobile communications, Internet and public transport. It also complicates the work of hospitals and schools, Msuya noted.

She is particularly concerned about the expansion of hostilities to new territories on both sides of the Ukrainian-Russian border, which only deepens the humanitarian crisis.

The UN and humanitarian organizations continue to provide assistance to hundreds of thousands of people in Ukraine. In the first seven months of 2024, approximately 6.2 million people received assistance. At the same time, the UN remains deeply concerned about the fate of 1.5 million people living in the temporarily occupied territories of Donetsk, Kherson, Luhansk and Zaporizhia regions.

Msuya also drew attention to the fact that international donors have allocated almost 1.4 billion dollars for humanitarian support in Ukraine this year, but the financing of humanitarian needs is covered by less than half.

We will remind that the meeting of the UN Security Council took place against the background of the opening of the 79th session of the UN General Assembly, where a high-level debate with the participation of heads of state and government is planned at the end of the month.
