Poland plans to place anti-personnel mines on the borders with Russia and Belarus

Poland plans to place anti-personnel mines on the border with Russia and Belarus as part of the “Eastern Shield” project. This was stated by the Deputy Minister of Defense of Poland Pawel Beyda, informs RMF24.

His statement came as Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia and Poland announced their intention to withdraw from the Ottawa Convention on the Ban on Anti-Personnel Landmines.

“We have no other way out. The situation on the border is serious. I am talking about the Polish-Belarusian and Polish-Russian border. This will be one of the elements of the “Eastern Shield”, – noted Beyda.

According to him, there are currently no anti-personnel mines in Poland, but the country has “the ability to produce them.”

“The factories of the Polish Armed Group will do this (mine production), but I don’t want to go into details. We are talking about an order for several hundred thousand, we can talk about a million pieces.”, – Beida explained.

We will remind that on March 18, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Estonia, Margus Tsahkna, said that he is in close contact with neighboring countries to take joint steps to withdraw from the Ottawa Convention, which bans anti-personnel mines.

“Our neighbor Russia is an aggressor who was and remains the most serious security threat not only to Estonia, but also to the whole of Europe.” – he emphasized.
