The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine reacted to Fico’s visit to Moscow

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine strongly condemned the decision of the Prime Minister of Slovakia, Robert Fico, to visit Moscow and hold talks with Vladimir Putin. Corresponding statement published on the official website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine.
“Weakness, dependence and short-sightedness of the energy policy of the Prime Minister of Slovakia, Robert Fico, pose threats to the whole of Europe. Russia has been using energy as a weapon for many years. For Moscow, it is a political lever, an instrument of humiliation and threats to sovereign states, a source of corruption, dependence and blackmail in interaction with foreign politicians.”, the statement says.
The ministry emphasized that many European countries have given up energy dependence on Moscow in the face of Russian aggression. Against this background, Fico’s position aimed at preserving such ties is surprising. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs believes that the actions of the Slovak prime minister actually help Russia push American and other gas suppliers out of the European market, keeping the continent dependent on the Kremlin.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine also emphasized that the country will not agree to the policy of appeasement, which has already proved its perniciousness in the last century. Therefore, the department calls on partners to strengthen cooperation to reduce dependence on Russian energy carriers and strengthen Europe’s energy security.
