The mobilisation of men aged 50 to 60 is legal and entirely possible: TCC

In Ukraine, men aged 50 to 60 can be mobilised, as confirmed by the Volyn Regional Territorial Centre for Recruitment and Social Support (TSC and SS).

According to the press service of this agency, there are no legal restrictions on conscription for men of this age group, unless they have grounds for exemption from military service for health reasons, family circumstances or other officially recognised reasons.

According to representatives of the military, mobilisation in Ukraine is carried out in accordance with established legal procedures, and reaching the age of 50 is not in itself a ground for exemption from service. The purpose of the call-up remains to recruit the most suitable reserve personnel who meet certain standards of readiness and experience.

“Regarding the “sensation” surrounding the news that men aged 50 to 60 will not be mobilised, we note that there is no ban on conscription of citizens of this age group. There is a relevant order on the mobilisation of persons of this age, but this document regulates the procedure for conscription of this category of persons and is, in fact, intended for official use only.

That is why, at present, men aged 50 to 60 are mobilised in Ukraine according to the established procedure. This means that citizens over the age of 50 who are not exempted from military service for health reasons or other legal grounds are subject to mobilisation under general conditions,” the statement said.

As further explained by the MCC, in the case of mobilisation of men of this age group, a thorough check of their fitness for military service is envisaged. Specialists analyse the health status of each conscript, in particular, assess the presence of any medical contraindications that may affect the performance of duties. In addition, special attention is paid to the candidate’s military speciality and previous service experience, which allows for an effective assessment of his or her readiness to perform tasks in the army. This approach is designed to ensure that mobilisation is appropriate and provides the army with qualified personnel.

In addition, there is a special internal document that defines the procedure for conscription of men aged 50 and over. Although this document is for official use only and is not disclosed to the general public, it is known to contain no provisions that would limit the mobilisation of men in this age group. Such a policy is reasonable in times of war, as the considerable experience and professional skills possessed by older citizens are important for performing tasks in the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

‘Thus, the mobilisation of citizens aged 50-60 is legitimate and fully compliant with the current legislation,’ the CCC staff summarise.
