The most profitable Ukrainian private higher education institution is the Interregional Academy of Personnel Management: income of Ukrainian higher education institutions
Ukrainian private universities are a powerful business, and even the university that ranks last in the ranking of the top twenty private universities earns 41.8 million hryvnias annually. In addition to private universities, there are 170 public universities in Ukraine, according to the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine.
“There are 722 legal entities registered in Ukraine (including branches and separate units) that provide services in the field of higher education with KVED 85.42. The largest number of higher education institutions is registered in the capital – 174 institutions. There are 44 of them in Odesa region, in Lviv and Kharkiv regions – 36 each, in the Kyiv region – 35, and in the Dnipropetrovsk region – 33”, – specified in the analytical report of experts YouControl.
As noted in the report, a significant part of businesses that provide services in the field of higher education are included in the Register of Non-Profit Organizations and are exempt from income tax.
“Such non-profit universities must use all their income (profits) exclusively to finance maintenance costs, to implement the goals (tasks, areas of activity) defined by the founding documents.” – the report says.
At the same time, there are many private universities that demonstrate significant amounts of income.
MAUP is the leader in revenue among private universities of Ukraine. The Interregional Academy of Personnel Management had the largest total income, that is, the money received by the university from operational, investment and financial activities. The amount received by the university for the year is more than UAH 578 million. The incomes of MAUP in 2023 increased by 102% compared to the pre-war year 2021. The cost of full-time undergraduate education here starts at UAH 30,500 per year. “The most expensive course is UAH 120,000 per year for postgraduate study in Law,” the report states.
The university unites more than 60 companies in the field of education, publishing and real estate. In addition, according to the authors of the report, MAUP, in addition to participating in the authorized capital of other companies (more than 30), has one of the most numerous networks of separate structural divisions among the analyzed universities – 45.
Among the most profitable private universities of Ukraine, the top five include universities not only from Kyiv. In particular, the private Ukrainian Catholic University – UAH 411 million, the Transcarpathian Hungarian Institute named after Ferenc Rakocza II – UAH 327.4 million, and the Kyiv University of Culture – UAH 297.7 million receive significant profits. Kyiv Medical University also earns almost a third of a billion – UAH 282.6 million.
The most successful university business, which shows the highest growth rates, is the Higher Educational Institution “American Universities Kyiv”. According to researchers, the income of this private higher education institution increased eighty times and amounted to more than UAH 60 million.
Previously, data was published on how the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine distributed funds provided by the state to support higher educational institutions and their effective activities. The Kyiv higher education institution – National Technical University “Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute” will receive the most funds. 1.530 billion hryvnias will be provided to finance universities.
