The National Bank has issued a commemorative coin dedicated to the art of pottery of the 17th century

National Bank of Ukraine reported on the introduction into circulation of the commemorative coin “Opishnian ceramics”. It is dedicated to the traditional pottery art of the 17th century of the Poltava Region, which is included in the National List of Intangible Cultural Heritage.

This is a new 5-hryvnia coin from the “Ukrainian Heritage” series, which honors the pottery tradition that was formed in the village of Opishnia back in the 17th century.

“Opishnya ceramics became a landmark phenomenon of national culture – both in artistic and ethnographic dimensions. In 2012, it was included in the National List of Elements of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Ukraine, which proves its importance as a component of cultural identity.” – emphasized the NBU.

The obverse of the coin depicts the zoomorphic sculpture “Lion” by Vasyl Omelyanenko, a famous Ukrainian potter from Opishna. On both sides of the composition, there are fragments of a characteristic stuck-on decor.

The reverse is decorated with a stylized composition of elements of the traditional ornamental decor of Opishnya pottery, in particular plates. They create the effect of going beyond one of them. In the upper part of the coin there is an inscription “Opishnian ceramics”.

The design of the coin was developed by Alisa Ivanova, and the sculptors were Anatoly Demyanenko and Volodymyr Demyanenko. The circulation of the new coin is up to 75,000 pieces. It will be possible to purchase it from August 6 in the online store of numismatic products of the NBU.
