The newly elected European Parliament (EP) supported the decision of the Washington NATO summit, in particular – the irreversibility of Ukraine’s membership in the alliance, as well as the provision of further military funding of 40 billion US dollars, write “Interfax-Ukraine”.
The relevant resolution was adopted on Wednesday in Strasbourg during the first plenary session of the European Parliament, elected as a result of the pan-European elections held in EU member states from June 6 to 9.
“(EP) Recalls that Russia’s aggressive war against Ukraine is part of a broader set of goals against the West, against our democracy and our values; approves the results of the NATO summit and reiterates its conviction that Ukraine is on an irreversible path to membership in NATO”, the document says.
The European Parliament called on the EU and its member states to increase military support for Ukraine “for as long as necessary and in any necessary form.” “(The EU) confirms its previous position, according to which all EU member states and NATO allies should collectively and individually commit to support Ukraine militarily by at least 0.25% of their GDP each year,” the EP confirmed its previous position, as well as approved NATO’s decision to guarantee military supplies to Ukraine in the amount of at least 40 billion US dollars in the near future.
In addition, the European Parliament advocated the lifting of restrictions on the use of Western weapons systems delivered to Ukraine against military facilities on the territory of Russia.
The EP also called on member states to further expand training for the Armed Forces of Ukraine in order to further increase their operational capabilities. “(The EU) stresses that insufficient or late supplies of arms and ammunition risk undoing the efforts made so far, and therefore strongly urges Member States to substantially increase and significantly accelerate military support and increase the capacity of their military industries,” the resolution reads.
