The number of dead Ukrainian soldiers in the war with Russia: the media made a calculation

As of today, the war has claimed the lives of at least 60,000-100,000 Ukrainian servicemen, and about 400,000 have received injuries that make it impossible for them to continue participating in hostilities. These data led The Economist magazine, based on analysis of data from intelligence reports, information from representatives of defense agencies, researchers and open sources.

“These reports are difficult to independently verify. And soldiers who are missing and are considered dead are not always included in this data. However, they give an approximate idea of the number of dead. At least 400,000 wounded servicemen are unable to continue further service in the army.”, the article says.

The UA Losses site, which catalogs the names and ages of the dead, allows you to determine losses by age category and estimate their percentage of the male population of Ukraine. According to their data, at least 60,435 troops have died since the full-scale invasion began in 2022. These losses amount to more than 0.5% of the pre-war male population of Ukraine in the age group of 18-49 years. This testifies to the significant demographic impact of the war on the most active part of the country’s population.

“At the same time, the real share of men killed in the war is higher. The same situation applies to those who were seriously injured. If we assume that for every one killed in battle there are six to eight seriously wounded Ukrainian soldiers, then almost every twenty man aged 18-49 died or was too wounded to continue fighting.”, – the publication notes.
