The President of Ukraine appointed Olha Reshetylova as the Commissioner for the Protection of the Rights of Military Personnel

The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, appointed Olga Reshetylova as the Commissioner for the Protection of the Rights of Servicemen. According to the president, this decision was an important step in the creation of an effective mechanism for the protection of military rights and the modernization of the management system in the Defense Forces of Ukraine.

In his message, Zelenskyi emphasized that Reshetylova has considerable experience in the field of human rights protection and support of state institutions. The President called her “a well-known, experienced and effective human rights defender” who has already done a lot for the development of Ukrainian society.

“Now the main task is to prepare, together with the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine, together with civil society, a draft law on the military ombudsman and all the necessary systemic foundations for the work of this institution.

Our soldiers must receive effective tools to protect their rights, and there must be a real modernization of people management in the Defense Forces of Ukraine.” – said the president.

Olga Reshetylova (Kobylinska) is a Ukrainian human rights defender, investigative journalist and public figure. She is the coordinator of the “Media Initiative for Human Rights” and the project manager of the Ukrainian Helsinki Union for Human Rights. Its activities cover the protection of human rights, investigation of violations and advocacy at the national and international levels.

Having received a master’s degree in political science at the Ostroh Academy National University in 2007, Reshetylova began to work actively while still studying, heading the university’s public relations department. There, she established cooperation with the media and partners, forming the foundation for further work in the field of public activism.

From 2008 to 2012, Reshetylova was the editor of the network of correspondents of the newspaper “Den”, where she studied issues of corruption and abuse of power, in particular in the activities of law enforcement agencies. During this period, she acquired a deep understanding of the regional problems of Ukraine.

With the beginning of the war in Eastern Ukraine in 2014, Reshetylova became a co-founder of the “Return Alive” fund, one of the largest volunteer projects to help the army. She was engaged not only in organizing fund-raising and providing military necessities, but also deeply immersed herself in the problems of the functioning of the security and defense sector. Its principled position has always been the observance of human rights in the army and democratic control over the power structures.

In 2016, together with Maria Tomak, Reshetylova founded the NGO “Media Initiative for Human Rights”. The organization combines journalistic and human rights tools to investigate human rights violations, especially in the context of the war in Ukraine. Since its inception, the initiative has conducted dozens of investigations, prepared reports and recommendations for the government, and is engaged in advocacy in the field of international humanitarian law.
