The SFMS received more than 1.3 million notifications: an attempt to launder UAH 53.1 billion was recorded

As of December 2024, the State Financial Monitoring Service of Ukraine recorded attempts to launder funds in the total amount of 53.1 billion hryvnias. This was the result of an analysis of more than 1.3 million reports on financial transactions that were subject to monitoring during the first nine months of the year. Compared to the same period last year, the number of such messages increased by 27%. At the same time, every fifth message concerns corruption, terrorism or money laundering. About this informs The opendatabase.
In general, 80% of these transactions related to threshold financial transactions that exceeded the limits set by the law, i.e. more than 400 thousand hryvnias per month. Another 20% of messages were classified as suspicious. These include transactions that may be related to corruption, money laundering or terrorist financing. The vast majority of such reports (99%) were submitted by banks, while non-bank institutions such as credit unions, insurance companies or pawn shops submitted only about 1% of the information.
This year, State Financial Monitoring handed over 780 materials related to suspicious transactions to law enforcement agencies. Most of them went to the National Police of Ukraine. These materials, covering cases worth more than 15 billion hryvnias, relate to fraud, financial fraud, cybercrime and embezzlement. A significant part of suspicious financial transactions was also transferred to the Security Service of Ukraine, in particular, in the amount of 9.7 billion hryvnias. In this case, it is mainly about crimes related to treason, collaborationism and the activities of criminal organizations.
The materials sent to the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine concerned ministers, deputies, judges and heads of state-owned enterprises. In general, these cases involved transactions worth 7.06 billion hryvnias. Of this amount, 4.2 billion hryvnias, or 59%, related to abuses by the heads of state-owned enterprises. Additionally, 173 materials with corruption risks in the amount of 12.1 billion hryvnias were discovered.
In addition, suspicions of financing terrorism or separatism were found in 109 cases. As a result of its activity, State Financial Monitoring was able to stop financial transactions in the amount of 6.1 billion hryvnias this year. These results testify to the high efficiency of the service in detecting and preventing financial crimes that threaten the economic stability of Ukraine.
