The State Department advised Russia to take Trump’s sanctions threats seriously

The US State Department emphasized that Russia should take seriously the words of Donald Trump, who did not rule out the strengthening of sanctions against the Russian Federation. About this stated State Department spokeswoman Tammy Bruce during a briefing.
She commented on questions about a possible change in the sanctions policy against the background of Trump’s statements and his attitude towards Putin.
“I wouldn’t call it a disappointment. I would call it a statement from someone who has led efforts to achieve peace in many different regions, who is clearly and completely transparent about what’s going on. And I think that’s something that Russia should take seriously.”– Bruce said.
She also reminded that the US president has a wide range of tools at his disposal to influence the situation and end the war.
“We are following reports that this weekend’s airstrikes by Russia have become the largest air attack on Ukraine since the beginning of the war. Our thoughts, prayers and awareness are obviously with the victims and their families. We urge restraint and call on all parties to avoid further escalation.”, the spokeswoman said.
She also confirmed the State Department’s support for diplomatic initiatives aimed at ending the war:
“We continue to support direct negotiations between Russia and Ukraine. The president supports any mechanism that leads to a fair, durable and lasting peace – any mechanism. There is no military solution to the Russian-Ukrainian conflict, and a diplomatic solution is necessary.”
Trump is currently considering imposing new sanctions on Russia this week, but no final decision has yet been made.
