The Supreme Court banned the UOC from using the Transfiguration Cathedral in Chernihiv

The Supreme Court of Ukraine made a decision according to which the UOC (Moscow Patriarchate) does not have the right to use the Savior and Transfiguration Cathedral in Chernihiv. About this reported Ministry of Culture and Strategic Communications.

The Economic Court of Cassation as part of the Supreme Court rejected the lawsuit of the Chernihiv Eparchy of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, which claimed the right to use the historical monument — the Savior and Transfiguration Cathedral, built in the 11th century. As noted in the Ministry of Culture, consideration of this case continued in various courts for more than a year and a half.

“However, the final decision in favor of the National Architectural and Historical Reserve “Ancient Chernihiv” confirmed the position of the Ministry of Culture and Strategic Communications regarding the need to comply with the requirements of the current legislation of Ukraine.”, – the agency concluded.

Transfiguration Cathedral in Chernihiv is one of the oldest stone buildings in Ukraine, built in the first half of the 11th century. It became the main shrine of the Chernihiv principality. The construction of the cathedral was started under Prince Mstislav, and completed by his brother Svyatoslav, the son of Yaroslav the Wise, who after the death of Mstislav headed the Chernihiv principality.
