Former commander of the US Army in Europe, Ben Godges statedthat Ukraine already has the best army in Europe, and the question of its non-compliance with NATO standards is not on the agenda. The main obstacle to Ukraine’s accession to the Alliance is political apprehension.
“Ukraine already has the best army in Europe. So the point is not that Ukrainians do not meet NATO standards. The US and Germany, the two largest and most powerful countries, have an excessive fear of escalation. They have no ill intentions. They are simply wrong. And they think that Russia is going to use nuclear weapons because Ukraine will attack across the border and hit a Russian airfield with American-made weapons or a German Taurus missile, for example. But I think that in such a situation there is no chance that Russia will use nuclear weapons.”, said the American general.
Godges believes that these fears are exaggerated, and Russia is unlikely to use nuclear weapons in response to Ukraine’s actions, even if they are carried out with the help of Western weapons. He calls on the USA and Germany to reconsider their position and not allow the fear of escalation to hinder Ukraine’s integration into NATO.
