The US government has banned its civil servants from having romantic relationships with Chinese citizens

The US government has banned its civil servants working in China from having romantic or sexual relationships with Chinese citizens. This restriction also applies to members of their families, informs Associated Press.

“Anyone who violates this policy will be ordered to leave China immediately.” – says the message.

Such a policy was introduced by former US Ambassador Nicholas Burns in January, shortly before his departure from China. At the same time, restrictions for Americans began to apply in the summer of 2024. They included a ban on relations with Chinese nationals who worked as security guards and other support staff at the US Embassy and five consulates in China. Days before Donald Trump took office, Burns expanded the ban to include all Chinese citizens.

The restrictions apply to US diplomatic missions in mainland China, including the embassy in Beijing, consulates in Shanghai, Guangzhou, Wuhan, Shenyang, and the consulate in Hong Kong. At the same time, the policy does not apply to employees who serve outside the PRC.

An exception is made for American employees who are already in a relationship with Chinese nationals — they can request an exemption from the new requirements. If such an appeal is rejected, they will have to end the relationship or leave the service.
