Facebook users suspect AI of mass blocking of groups

Facebook users are reporting massive bans on groups with a wide variety of topics, from Pokemon fans to fans of mechanical keyboards. The company does not officially explain the reasons, only assures that the situation will be corrected. Users suspect that the incident was caused by an incorrect AI moderation setting, informs TechCrunch.

Administrators of blocked communities received system messages with formal explanations for violations of Facebook policies – such as “supporting terrorism”, “displaying naked bodies” or “scenes of violence”. However, the victims assure that such content has never been in their groups.

Among those blocked are large communities with thousands, and sometimes even millions, of members. For example, a group for bird photographers with an audience of one million was blocked allegedly for sexual content. The founder of this group, as noted, “loved birds and nurtured the community for four years, but not in the sense in which Facebook reproached him.”

The company Meta, through its director of communications, promised a prompt solution to the situation. Although the statement only mentions “some groups”, the number of complaints on social media, especially on Reddit, shows the scale of the problem.

“We are aware of a technical error that has affected some Facebook groups. We are currently fixing the situation.” – said the representative of the company.

Verified paid subscription owners received priority assistance, which guarantees priority service. At the same time, the work of the remaining groups remained suspended or they were completely deleted.

For some users, these groups are part of the business, so they are already preparing lawsuits against Meta. Others are creating petitions addressed to Mark Zuckerberg’s company. At least one user was able to obtain compensation. In January 2025, Zuckerberg agreed to pay Donald Trump $25 million for blocking his account. The lawsuit, which began in 2021, was framed as a violation of the right to free speech, and ended in a mutual agreement.
