The Verkhovna Rada declared July 28 a Day of Mourning and Commemoration of Ukrainians Who Died in Russian Captivity

The Verkhovna Rada established July 28 as the Day of Mourning and Commemoration of all Ukrainians — military, volunteers and civilians who died, were tortured or executed in Russian captivity. Parliament passed Resolution No. 10188, emphasizing that this decision is a sign of respect and memory.

“First of all, about the heroes of Mariupol, who, by order of the command, left Azovstal in May 2022 and were executed despite the promised guarantee of life preservation” – says the official message.

At the same time, the approved document serves as a reminder of the state’s duty to preserve memory, defend the truth, support the families of the victims and continue the struggle for those who are still in captivity. The Verkhovna Rada called on the government and local authorities to hold appropriate commemoration events every year.

It will be recalled that on May 1, the Coordinating Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War declared that approximately 8,000 Ukrainian servicemen were in Russian captivity. At the same time, during each exchange, those whom Russia did not recognize as prisoners also return home. There are also 2,000 confirmed Ukrainian civilians in Russian captivity.
