Three levels of protection of energy facilities: Shmyhal talked about fortifications

In the first year of the full-scale war, a decision was made to implement three levels of fortifications to protect Ukraine’s energy facilities from terrorist attacks by the Russian Federation. One of these levels is experimental and valuable.
This was stated by Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal during the “Ukraine 2024. Independence” Forum.
Shmyhal explained that the first level provided for the protection of energy facilities with the help of gabions, which serve to protect against indirect damage.
The second level includes the construction of monumental reinforced concrete shelters for transformers and other critical objects. According to him, most of such shelters have already been built under the leadership of Ukrenergo, and tens of billions of hryvnias have been allocated for their implementation.
“Yesterday, August 26, the first cluster munition attacks on our distribution substations took place. These were dozens of missiles. Despite dozens of hits, we lost only a small amount of equipment”– noted the Prime Minister.
The third level of fortifications, according to Shmyhal, turned out to be experimental. These are huge structures that should cover substations the size of three football fields.
“These fortifications are extremely expensive, and for the moment their economic feasibility remains in question. The cost of such protection is estimated at hundreds of billions of hryvnias.”Shmyhal emphasized.
Attacks on Ukraine’s energy facilities continue Since the beginning of this year, the Ukrainian energy system has been subjected to about ten massive attacks by Russian terrorists. As a result of these strikes, there is a power deficit, and emergency and planned repairs are ongoing at energy facilities.
Yuriy Boyko, adviser to the Prime Minister of Ukraine, member of the Supervisory Board of Ukrenergo, noted that yesterday’s shelling, on August 26, will force us to adjust our plans for winter preparations.
It is worth adding that yesterday Russia carried out the most massive air attack against Ukraine, launching 236 air attack weapons.
