Today the US elects a president: a crucial day that will change the future of Ukraine

Today, on 5 November, the US will hold its presidential election, in which Americans will go to the polls to elect a new leader. This election is important not only for the United States, but also for Ukraine, as the US political course directly affects international relations and the support provided to Ukraine.

US election results are sometimes announced within hours of polls closing, but this year, due to high political tensions and extremely close competition between the candidates, Americans may have to wait longer. In some cases, the results of the presidential race have been announced late at night or the next morning, but this time, due to the close contest in many key states, information about the predicted winner may be delayed.

The ratings of Democrat Kamala Harris, who currently holds the position of Vice President, and Republican Donald Trump, who has already been President of the United States, are almost neck and neck. For several weeks now, there has been a slight gap in support for the two candidates, indicating a very close race.

If the results are too close, it could lead to a recount. For example, in the state of Pennsylvania, where the previous election showed a narrow margin of 1.1 percentage points, a recount would be mandatory if the difference between the votes is less than half a percentage point. In addition, numerous legal challenges to the results are likely, as more than 100 lawsuits were filed before the election, including those related to voting rights and voter list management by the Republicans.

In addition to legal challenges, several other factors could lead to delays in the determination of the results, including possible unrest at polling stations. However, some states, such as Michigan, have streamlined their vote counting procedures, and this time around, significantly fewer voters are voting by mail, as was the case during the Covid pandemic, which may speed up the process somewhat.
