Training of military environmental auditors starts in Ukraine

For the first time, courses have been launched in Ukraine to train military environmental auditors in the field of humanitarian demining. This was reported by the press service of the Ministry of Defence of Ukraine.

It is noted that upon completion of the training, new specialists will be able to conduct audits and draw up working and final reports in accordance with European environmental standards. The course ‘Environmental Audit and Environmental Issues Related to Humanitarian Demining’ was organised by the Ministry of Defence and the Ministry of Environmental Protection with the support of the OSCE for Ukraine and will last until mid-November.

The first 20 participants are military personnel and civil servants from the Environmental Safety Department of the Main Mine Action Directorate of the Ministry of Defence and the Mine Action Centre of Excellence. They will undergo comprehensive theoretical and practical training at the State Environmental Academy of Postgraduate Education and receive certificates upon completion. Already during their training, the future auditors, together with the State Environmental Inspectorate, inspected military facilities and recorded the environmental damage caused by Russian missile and bomb attacks.

Colonel Ruslan Berehulia, Head of the Main Directorate of Mine Action, stressed that these courses are unique and aimed at improving the professional competence of military environmentalists in environmental auditing. He noted that without proper knowledge of this area, it is impossible to minimise the negative impact on the ecosystem.
