Trump administration curtails efforts to investigate Russian war crimes

The administration of US President Donald Trump is taking targeted steps to curtail initiatives aimed at holding Russia, its leadership and allies accountable for alleged war crimes in Ukraine. About this informs The Washington Post.

The White House decided to withdraw from the European Union-led international coalition created to hold Moscow accountable for violations of international law during the invasion of Ukraine. In addition, the activities of the War Crimes Accountability Group at the US Department of Justice were curtailed and a program to seize the assets of sanctioned Russian oligarchs was canceled.

“Also, the position of the coordinator authorized by law to gather intelligence from across the government on atrocities committed by the Russians in Ukraine was abolished.” – says the message.

The position was created under legislation initiated by Congressman Jason Crowe (D-Colorado) and former Congressman Michael Waltz (R-Florida), who is now Donald Trump’s national security adviser.

“The Atrocities Coordinator position is designed to hold Putin accountable for the crimes he committed against the Ukrainian people. The position was created by Congress on a bipartisan basis, and the administration must allow whoever fills the position to fulfill their duties as required by law.”,” explained Senator Crowe.

According to him, if Donald Trump and Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard want to achieve lasting peace, they must be ready to hold Putin accountable for the crimes he committed in Ukraine.

“So far, this administration has demonstrated that it is willing to let Putin off the hook.” Crowe added.
