Trump seeks to bring Ukraine and Russia to the negotiating table: candidate for national security adviser

US President-elect Donald Trump intends to bring Ukraine and Russia to the negotiating table to find ways to end the war. About this reported Michael Waltz, the Republican congressman from Florida whom Trump plans to appoint as the new national security adviser, replacing Jake Sullivan.

The president has made it clear that he wants to bring both sides to the negotiating table. Its purpose is to end the conflict, not to support its continuation“, — said Waltz in a commentary for “Voice of America” after the Republicans’ meeting with Trump.

It is worth noting that Volz, while in Congress, initially actively supported financial and military aid to Ukraine, arguing that it was necessary to achieve victory. He repeatedly visited Kyiv as part of American delegations, demonstrating support for the Ukrainian government and people. However, in September 2023, Volz said that “the era of open checks for Ukraine from Congress is over.” This statement marked a change in his position on Ukrainian support, and as early as April 2024, he voted against an additional $60 billion funding package for Ukraine.

Volz also emphasized that the final vision of the security policy for Ukraine will be formed by the president himself.

Pointing to the importance of Trump’s intentions to reduce the scale of US involvement in the conflict, he emphasized:

This decision is made by the president, not me.”

Volz’s statements indicate a likely revision of American foreign policy toward Ukraine, where the emphasis may shift from support to the search for diplomatic solutions. Experts point out that if such an initiative is implemented, Ukraine and the Russian Federation may find themselves in a situation where US diplomatic pressure is aimed at reaching a compromise, possibly on terms that will require certain concessions.
