EU and the world

Turkey will be able to replace Russia as a gas supplier to the European Union

Turkey may become the main supplier of natural gas to the European Union, replacing Russia. About this informs Hürriyet publication.

Due to the expiration of the agreement, the supply of Russian gas through Ukraine has stopped. At the same time, the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyi said that he does not plan to extend the agreement. In this context, Turkey looks like the safest alternative for supplying Europe with gas.

Turkey benefits from its strategic geographic location and developed natural gas transportation infrastructure.

“After the start of the war between Russia and Ukraine, gas from Turkey is being sold to countries such as Moldova, Bulgaria and Hungary. Turkey also has the potential to export more gas to European markets if the connection capacity with Greece and Bulgaria is increased. Together with with gas produced in Turkey, it will be possible to sell gas from different countries to Europe”, the message says.

Currently, Turkey receives gas from Russia through the Blue Stream and Turkish Stream pipelines, as well as from Azerbaijan and Iran through TANAP. In addition, the country already exports gas to Bulgaria, Macedonia, Hungary, Moldova and Romania.

It will be recalled that Turkey negotiated with the United States on the lifting of sanctions, which would allow the country to continue using Gazprombank to pay for Russian gas imports. Later, Turkey was given permission to pay for Russian gas to bypass sanctions.
