UK imposes sanctions on Russian troops for using chemical weapons in Ukraine

On October 8, Great Britain announced the introduction of sanctions against the Russian military, accusing them of using chemical weapons during the war in Ukraine. As Reuters reports, the list of sanctions includes the units of radiation, chemical and biological protection of the Russian Federation, as well as their head, Igor Kirilov.

British Foreign Minister David Lammy said that the country will not stand by while Russia and its leadership violate international law, including the Convention on the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons. He said the sanctions were in response to the Kremlin’s brutal tactics, including the use of chemicals such as chloropicrin.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Great Britain, Russian troops systematically use chemical weapons against the Armed Forces of Ukraine. In September 2023 alone, the occupiers used chemical munitions at least 250 times, which was confirmed by the command of the Armed Forces Support Forces.
