Ukraine calls on Hungary not to block its path to NATO: bilateral document is being prepared

Ukraine and Hungary are discussing the signing of a bilateral agreement in which Hungary will undertake not to impede Ukraine’s accession to NATO. This was stated by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy during a meeting with the heads of territorial communities and districts of Zakarpattia.

Hungary may become one of the countries that block our path. However, we are ready to overcome any obstacles. It is important that our neighbours are allies, not obstacles, on our path to victory,’ Zelenskyy said.

Currently, a bilateral document with Hungary is being prepared, which includes measures to eliminate misunderstandings and overcome challenges of the past, present and future. Part of the agreement will address security issues, in particular those related to NATO.

This is a gentle question that can be used to start a dialogue with Hungary: please do not block Ukraine’s invitation to NATO,’ he said.

Zelenskyy also said that Ukraine has already submitted its proposals to the Hungarian side, which include provisions on NATO. He stressed that after the war is over, Ukraine’s membership in NATO will be the best guarantee of security.

In addition, the European Union is considering ways to circumvent Hungary’s veto on the allocation of more than €6 billion in aid to Ukraine, including through possible voluntary contributions to the European Peace Fund.
