Ukraine is ready to discuss controversial historical issues with Poland: Sibiga

Ukrainian diplomats declared their readiness for a dialogue with their Polish colleagues regarding the discussion of “controversial issues of common history”, in particular the Volyn tragedy. This was reported by Andrii Sybiga, head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, in comments for Radio Liberty.
Sybiga emphasized that Ukraine has sufficient political will and diplomatic resources to resolve the most difficult issues, in particular with Poland, which he called one of the closest allies and friends. This applies to both historical topics and contemporary challenges.
Before that, Sybiga’s meeting with Polish President Andrzej Duda was announced during the Warsaw Security Forum. The meeting is planned in a tête-à-tête format, which indicates the importance and delicacy of the discussed issues.
We remind you that in July, Polish Minister of Defense Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysh expressed the opinion that Poland should issue an ultimatum to Ukraine: the resolution of the “Volyn issue” is a condition for Ukraine’s accession to the European Union.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Poland, Radosław Sikorski, also noted that the Volyn tragedy can be left in the past only after the exhumation and proper burial of the victims. His colleague, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Poland Teofil Bartoszewski, said that this issue will be discussed as part of negotiations on Ukraine’s accession to the EU.
