Ukraine will directly buy American gas for the first time: details

The Ukrainian energy company DTEK concluded a historic agreement with the American exporter Venture Global on the direct supply of liquefied natural gas.  This agreement, the first of its kind, marks an important step in strengthening Ukraine’s energy independence and weakening Russia’s long-standing influence on the country’s energy sector.

About this informs Financial Times.

The supply of American gas will begin already this year and will continue until the end of 2026. This step is especially relevant against the background of intensifying Russian attacks on Ukrainian energy infrastructure. The CEO of Venture Global, Mike Sabel, emphasized that this agreement will contribute to strengthening the energy security of Ukraine and Europe as a whole.

Analysts believe that this agreement could become a turning point in Ukraine’s relations with Russia in the energy sector. Olga Hakova, deputy director for European energy security at the Atlantic Council, said that this agreement could help Ukraine “drive the last nail into the coffin of Russian gas dominance” in the region.

Venture Global plans to deliver LNG from the US Gulf of Mexico to European ports, from where it will be transported to Ukraine via pipelines. This agreement is an important step in diversifying Ukraine’s energy supply sources and strengthening its resilience to external threats.
