Ukraine will receive funds from Russian assets in the coming months: Freeland

Canada’s Finance Minister Khrystia Freeland said that the global plan to finance Ukraine’s military needs at the expense of Russian assets is in the final stages of implementation and Ukraine will be able to receive the first funds in the coming months. About this informs edition of Politico.
“I am very sure that Ukraine will start receiving money in the coming months. For now, all we are talking about are technical points,” she said.
It will be recalled that after the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, the international community froze about 280 billion dollars of Russian assets as part of sanctions. Khrystia Freeland played a key role in convincing the Allies of the necessity of this step.
For a long time, Western countries discussed the possibility of confiscating these assets, fearing possible global consequences. However, in the summer of 2023, the G7 countries, including Canada, the US and Japan, agreed on a plan to use the proceeds from frozen assets to provide Ukraine with a $50 billion loan to help support military operations.
Freeland actively promoted this initiative, using her connections with influential international partners, in particular, US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen. This decision is unprecedented and shows the consolidated support of Ukraine by the international community in its fight against Russian aggression.
