Ukrzaliznytsia received EUR 330 million for the renewal of locomotives

The fleet of locomotives of JSC “Ukrzaliznytsia” will be replenished with new electric locomotives for freight transportation. Given the fact that export supplies by sea are currently limited, and it will take 2 years and 9.5 billion hryvnias to restore the port infrastructure, investing in freight rail transport looks like a good idea.

Ukrzaliznytsia will receive an additional EUR 330 million from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD). The memorandum on this was signed with the Ministry of Community Development, Territories and Infrastructure during the Ukraine Recovery Conference (URC 2024), which took place this week in Berlin.

“The issue of updating the fleet of locomotives for Ukrzaliznytsia is critical and urgent. The collaboration of the World Bank and the EBRD is an example of how one of the largest international financial institutions joined forces in the implementation of such a large-scale project. Obtaining new and high-tech electric locomotives will significantly increase the efficiency of freight transportation.” , – noted Yevhen Lyashchenko, head of the board of JSC “Ukrzaliznytsia”.

This is not the first significant investment in the development of freight rail transportation that has arrived this year. Earlier, Ukrzaliznytsia also received 190 million US dollars as part of the grant funding project “Restoration of Critical Logistics Infrastructure and Network Connection (RELINC)” from the World Bank.
