As Rubio noted, during the conversation he repeated a clear message from US President Donald Trump: hostilities must end.
“I echoed Trump’s message: the death and destruction must stop. The US has presented a strong peace plan, and we welcome the prisoner-of-war agreement reached in Istanbul. Let’s not miss this tremendous opportunity. It’s time to end this war.” – said the state secretary.
An official report on the content of the conversation also appeared on the website of the US State Department. It emphasizes that Washington is committed to the final cessation of hostilities between Russia and Ukraine. The report says a comprehensive peace plan proposed by the US is the best way forward.
In addition, in the commentary of the CBS channel, Marco Rubio reportedthat Donald Trump intends to hold a personal meeting with Putin as soon as possible. According to the Secretary of State, the head of the White House has already publicly voiced his desire to establish a direct dialogue with the Russian leader and considers such a meeting necessary. The American side has already submitted a corresponding proposal, and now, according to Rubio, it is only a matter of agreeing on the details — place, date and agenda.
“The organization of such a meeting requires preliminary preparation, so I cannot say that the final planning is already underway. But the president wants the meeting to take place as soon as possible. I think that the Russian side has also expressed readiness. Now the main thing is to gather the parties, determine where, when and what they will talk about.” – explained the state secretary.
Rubio also emphasized that the United States is not interested in endless negotiations that do not produce a concrete result.
“There must be progress, there must be movement forward,” – he emphasized.
According to the Secretary of State, the US administration is waiting for the appearance of a document prepared by both sides — Ukraine and Russia — that will prove readiness for mutual concessions and testify to a realistic, pragmatic approach to the settlement process.
“If there is a document in the coming days that shows concessions from both sides, we can confidently continue to participate in this process. If the result is weak and meaningless, then we may change our attitude to the situation.” Rubio added.
It will be recalled that Donald Trump previously announced that on Monday, May 19, he will hold telephone talks with Volodymyr Putin and Volodymyr Zelensky.
