South Korean president charged with coup

South Korean prosecutors accused President Yoon Seok-yeol of leading the rebellion. It is about the martial law he declared in December, which triggered his impeachment process. About this informs NBC News.

If convicted, Yun could face a lengthy prison term for his martial law decree, which banned political and parliamentary activities and controlled the media. In addition to the president, the prime minister was also impeached, and several high-ranking officials of the military command were charged with involvement in the alleged mutiny.

In recent days, the court has twice refused the prosecutor’s office to keep Yun in custody for the duration of the investigation. However, in view of the charges, the court again demanded his arrest.

“Prosecutors have decided to indict Yoon Seok-yeol, who has been charged with being the leader of the rebellion. The punishment of the leader of the rebellion finally begins“, – said representative of the Democratic Party Han Min-soo.

Sedition is one of the few crimes from which the South Korean president is not immune. This crime is punishable by life imprisonment or the death penalty, although the death penalty has not been used in the country for several decades.
