Vietnam and Russia agree to sign agreements on the construction of nuclear power plants

Vietnam and Russia agreed to start negotiations and conclude agreements on the construction of nuclear power plants in Vietnam as soon as possible. This was stated in their joint statement released on Sunday after the visit of Vietnamese President To Lam to Moscow. informs Reuters.
“Construction of stations using advanced technologies will be carried out in strict compliance with the requirements of nuclear and radiation safety and taking into account socio-economic development”, – it is noted in the document.
Vietnam has revived plans to develop nuclear power that were frozen about a decade ago. This is happening within the framework of the state’s efforts to increase the amount of electricity to meet the needs of a rapidly growing economy.
Earlier, the country’s government announced its intention to commission nuclear power plants with a total capacity of up to 6.4 GW between 2030 and 2035. Earlier this year, Vietnam announced plans to hold talks on nuclear projects with a number of foreign partners, including Russia, Japan, South Korea, France and the United States.
The joint statement also emphasized that Vietnam and Russia intend to strengthen cooperation in the field of oil and gas, particularly in terms of supplying Russian oil and liquefied natural gas to Vietnam. In addition, the parties declared their readiness to promote the expansion of the activities of their energy companies in each other’s territory.
