Serbia will begin to set up shelters due to fears of nuclear war

President of Serbia Aleksandar Vučić stated, that the country must strengthen its military and rebuild bomb shelters because of the growing risk of nuclear war. According to him, since 2011-2012, Belgrade stopped funding the shelter system, which led to their disrepair.

“We have to resolve this issue as soon as possible to be ready for any situation. Our storage facilities, their number and the ability to host people in the event of a nuclear attack is a huge problem that we have to fix.” Vuchich noted.

Commenting on the conflict between Ukraine and Russia, the president emphasized that the global threat of war today is higher than ever. He noted that any aggressive statements from both sides only increase tensions, instead of contributing to de-escalation.

“My predictions are that the situation will spiral out of control and this will only lead to more conflicts and more problems. We must strengthen our military to deter any potential aggressor, but we must also be prepared for other scenarios, including the possibility nuclear threat”, – stressed Vuchich.

The President of Serbia also noted that ending investments in the civil defense system more than a decade ago was a strategic mistake. In his opinion, Serbia should prepare for all possible scenarios, including a nuclear threat.
