Hamas and Israel agree to 60-day ceasefire

Hamas and Israel reached an agreement on a 60-day ceasefire in the Gaza Strip. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu signed a draft of the relevant agreement even before the document was handed over to representatives of the Hamas group. About this during the briefing reported White House spokeswoman Caroline Levitt.

According to her, special envoy Witkoff, together with US President Donald Trump, handed over to Hamas the draft agreement on a ceasefire, signed by Netanyahu.

“We hope that a ceasefire will be reached in Gaza to bring all the hostages home. That has been a priority of the administration since day one.”, — noted Levitt.

The White House emphasized that negotiations are still ongoing, and that the final confirmation of the ceasefire will be officially released after the final agreements are reached.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has told the families of the hostages that he is ready to accept a cease-fire agreement and the release of prisoners in Gaza, proposed by US special representative Steve Witkoff. Hamas took time to study the document.

At the same time, Netanyahu previously stressed that Israel “will not stop the war in Gaza under any circumstances”, even in the case of agreements on the release of more hostages. On April 26, Hamas announced its readiness to release all Israeli hostages and conclude a five-year truce with Israel.

The Israeli side reports that 58 hostages remain in captivity, of which approximately 23 are alive. Most of the roughly 250 people captured in a 2023 Hamas offensive were released as part of earlier ceasefire agreements.
